Adaptive Performance Management for UMTS Networks

چکیده
In this paper, we introduce a framework for the adaptive control of UMTS networks in order to improve bandwidth utilization of the radio channels. The key contribution of the paper constitutes the introduction of a performance management information base for dynamically adjusting the packet scheduler and admission controller. Thus, the adaptive control framework closes the loop between network operation and network control. Furthermore, the adaptive control framework can effectively deal with the different time scales of packet scheduling and admission control. Moreover, we present a traffic model for non real-time UMTS traffic based on measured trace data. The analysis and scaling process of the measured trace data with respect to different UMTS bandwidth classes constitutes the basic concept of this traffic characterization. Using this traffic model and simulation on the IP-level, the gain of employing the adaptive control framework is illustrated by performance curves for various QoS measures.

متن کاملMathematical Analysis of Optimal Tracking Interval Management for Power Efficient Target Tracking Wireless Sensor Networks
In this paper, we study the problem of power efficient tracking interval management for distributed target tracking wireless sensor networks (WSNs). We first analyze the performance of a distributed target tracking network with one moving object, using a quantitative mathematical analysis. We show that previously proposed algorithms are efficient only for constant average velocity objects howev...
متن کاملCommon radio resource management for WLAN-UMTS integration at radio access level
WLAN-UMTS integration in the UMTS-based approach can be performed either at the UMTS Core Network (CN) or Radio Access Network (UTRAN). Both interworking solutions provide the operator with additional license-free bandwidth and promise good handover performance. Integration at the radio access level has the advantage that the UMTS core network protocols remain unaffected and the interworking ar...

In this paper we evaluate the performance of an hybrid and adaptive call admission control protocol for UMTS cellular networks with underlying tunnel-WLANs. either at the cell periphery or elsewhere within the UMTS coverage area. This CAC policy is proposed to limit the occurrence of hard IEEE 802.11 WLAN-UMTS handovers to mobiles using real time applications. It is based on the service class d...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Congestion Alleviating Protocol for Healthcare Applications in Wireless Body Sensor Networks: Learning Automata Approach
Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSNs) involve a convergence of biosensors, wireless communication and networks technologies. WBSN enables real-time healthcare services to users. Wireless sensors can be used to monitor patients’ physical conditions and transfer real time vital signs to the emergency center or individual doctors. Wireless networks are subject to more packet loss and congestion. T...
